Top Five International Captains Who Were Actually Surprising Choices
Most of the times, the selectors provide the captaincy baton to the experienced and in-form players. But sometimes they come with some surprising choices mostly due to some big crisis moment.
Here are the top five international captains who were the surprising choices at the initial period.
Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka: ODI)
After making his Test debut in November 2012, Sri Lankan cricketer has slowly grown up as a regular Test player. In the last few years, he played regular Test cricket. So, the Test captaincy wasn’t much shocker for him. During Sri Lanka tour of South Africa in February 2019, Karunaratne took the captaincy charge of the Test team for the first time. Sri Lanka stunned everyone in that Test series and won that two-match series by 2-0.
But then he was selected as a Sri Lankan captain for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. At that time Sri Lanka faced the leadership crisis but Karunaratne played his last ODI before the World Cup squad selection in March 2015. He had only 17 ODI experiences before that selection. So, it was very shocking news. Sri Lanka finished at the no.6-position in the CWC 2019.
