VB Chandrasekhar’s Suicide Directed To TNPL Betting Probe

One of the unfortunate news to hear in the last month was the suicide of VB Chandrasekhar. The Tamil Nadu former player, who also appeared for Indian National Cricket Team and worked as a chief selector, VB Chandrasekhar committed suicide over debts. However, this led to an investigation by the officials regarding the betting.

VB Chandrasekhar committed suicide by hanging at his house in Mylapore, Chennai on August 16th. Chandrasekhar was found hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom at his residence in Mylapore. His wife reported the incident to the police and had stated that even after repeated knocks to the door, Chandrasekhar had not opened the door.

Chandrasekhar was 57 and said to have suffered losses in his cricket-related businesses. He owned a team VB Kanchi Veerans in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. And also, ran the VB Cricket Academy in Chennai. The suicide led to new questions as if there were any betting pressures on him during the course of the tournament.

Recently, reports emerged on Monday that bookies had allegedly taken control of one of its teams. Meanwhile, the suicide of one of the team owners, VB Chandrasekhar, on the day of the final last month, had put the Chennai police on high alert.

Police sources said they stumbled upon information about a possible betting racquet while investigating some of VB’s close friends and cricketers in the state following his suicide.

The police also confirmed that the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) officials received several anonymous letters. Especially, about the betting scam which prompted the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) of the BCCI to conduct a detailed preliminary enquiry into the issue.

“Though those were not directly related to the suicide case, we recorded some of the important facts. And also, we passed on to our colleagues in Mumbai and Delhi,” a senior police officer said. There were a few names that were being circulated in a closed WhatsApp group which made us look into the case,” the officer added.

Chandrasekhar played an active role in the TNPL season. His team Veerans qualified for the final four. He was also an active commentator for the tournament. However, it was unfortunate to see a person with such a calibre committing suicide.
