imgDEHRADUN: Puducherry vaulted to the top of the Plate Group table with a clinical eight-wicket win over Chandigarh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Monday. The loss also halted the UT cricket team’s three-match unbeaten streak in the tournament.

Veteran R Vinay Kumar ripped through the Chandigarh top order with his two for 20 to set it up for Puducherry after they elected to field at the Kasiga College Ground.

Left-arm spinner Sagar Udeshi (3 for 29) then ran through the middle-order while the other seamer Sagar Trivedi (2 for 36) wiped out the tail as Chandigarh were bundled out for 152 in 45.3 overs.

Jaskaran Singh and Uday Kaul were the only batsmen to show some resistance, scoring 36 and 34 runs, respectively even as the rest of the batting collapsed despite getting to starts.

Chandigarh got off to a woeful start with skipper Manan Vohra (1) and Arjun Azad (0) departing in quick succession. While Azad was caught behind off Vinay Kumar, Vohra was dismissed after being found to be obstructing the field.

Thereafter, stumper Uday Kaul battled the initial jitters to score a patient 63-ball 34, laced with five hits to the fence and more importantly propel the side past the 50-run mark, thanks to a 29-run fourth wicket stand with Bipul Sharma (14).

The other fruitful partnership for Chandigarh came lower down the order when Jaskaran (36 off 42 balls; 4X5, 6X1) and Shresth Nirmohi (11 off 26; 4X1) forged together another 29 runs for the 9th wicket that helped Chandigarh crawl to 152 before being bundled out with 27 balls to spare.

In reply, wicket-keeper batsman S Karthik remained unbeaten on a 75-ball 70 to steer Puducherry to a comfortable win in 26 overs. The Puducherry team started with a brilliant 65-run opening start between Arun Karthik and S Karthik.

While Arun scored a breezy 34 off 25 balls, laced with six boundaries and a six, the other Karthik smashed 11 boundaries in his undefeated 70-run knock. Captain Damodaren Rohit also came up with a constructive 40-ball 28, inclusive of two fours and a six.

Paras Dogra also came up with a 17-ball 11, laced with one six to complete the formalities in the company of S Karthik, as Puducherry romped home with 24 overs to spare. The duo ended with a 67-run second wicket unbeaten partnership.

For the Chandigarh side, Jaskaran and Arjun picked a wicket each.

With four matches left, Puducherry now have 16 points, two points clear of Chandigarh in the Plate Group where the toppers make the last-eight.
