Vijay Hazare Trophy: Shivam Dube's effort in vain, Mumbai lose
BENGALURU: A few months ago, Shivam Dube spent a lot of time at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. As part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team, he didn't get much game time at the venue but he spent long hours mastering the big hits that he is known for.
Against Karnataka, in their Vijay Hazare Group 'A' fixture here on Thursday, the towering all-rounder put the practice to optimum use, smashing an awe-inspiring 67-ball-118 (7x4, 10x6), his maiden List A century. But, his sizzling knock, highlighted with brutal, yet clean hitting, failed to get the defending champions Mumbai across the line. Seasoned pacer Abhimanyu Mithun (3/40) struck crucial blows in the business end of the contest to hand Karnataka a narrow nine-run win.
With the win, Karnataka maintained their position on top of the table (20 pts), while Mumbai's chances of making the knockouts suffered another big blow.
Mumbai found their go-to man in Dube, who tore into the home team's bowling attack and developed a special liking for leggie Shreyas Gopal, who had a nightmarish day on the field. When Dube was finally dismissed in the 42nd over, trying to smash Mithun over long on, the visitors were still in with a chance, needing 36 runs off 47 balls with two wickets in hand. Pacers were again pressed into the attack and they cleaned up the tail. Mumbai chasing Karnataka's competitive 312/7 were bowled out for 303 in 48.1 overs.
Brief scores: Karnataka 312-7 in 50 overs (KL Rahul 58, D Padikkal 79, MK Pandey 62, RP Kadam 32) bt Mumbai 303 in 48.1 overs (A Tare 32, S Lad 34, S Dube 118; A Mithun 3-40, P Krishna 2-39, K Gowtham K 3-51) by 9 runs.
