Vijay Hazare Trophy: Vishnu Vinod's six-laden ton sets up big Kerala win
Vishnu Vinod continued his stellar run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring his second century of the tournament, to set up Kerala's 65-run win in a Group A game against Chhattisgarh at Alur in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Vishnu struck 123 off 91 balls with five fours and 11 sixes as Kerala notched up 296/9 after being put into bat. Chhattisgarh were bowled out for 231 in 46 overs in the chase.
Vishnu had struck a century earlier in the tournament against Karnataka but he was on the losing side. With his ton on Tuesday, the spunky opener has topped the run-chart with 353 runs from five innings at a strike rate of 106.32. He began the innings with a six over cover off Veer Pratap Singh in the first ball he faced and kept clearing the ropes in a responsible knock.
Skipper Robin Uthappa came up to open for Kerala but his bad run continued as he was dismissed for 6. Sanju Samson fell for 16. Mohammed Azharuddeen (56 off 53; 3x4, 3x6) gave the innings the late flourish.
Chhattisgarh were in the game when Ashutosh Singh (77) was at the crease. But once he was dismissed, their challenge ended. Sandeep Warrier (3/25) was once again outstanding for Kerala with the new ball and the old ball picking up three crucial wickets, including that of Ashutosh. MD Nidheesh (4/54), who was playing his first game of the tournament, and Asif KM (3/50) ended the lower-order resistance swiftly to give Kerala a comfortable win, their second in five matches.
Brief scores: Kerala 296/6 in 50 overs (Vishnu Vinod 123, Mohammed Azharudden 56, Sachin Baby 34, Jalaj Saxena 34; Veer Pratap Singh 3/82, Sumit Ruikar 2/40) bt Chhattisgarh 231 all out in 46 overs (Ashutosh Singh 77, Jiwanjot Singh 56; MD Nidheesh 4/54, Sandeep Warrier 3/25, KM Asif 3/50) by 65 runs.
