Vijay Shankar set to miss TN's first game
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu allrounder and vice-captain Vijay Shankar is unlikely to be available for the side's opening match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Rajasthan in Jaipur on Tuesday. The 28-year-old had suffered thumb injuries twice during India A's series against South Africa 'A' and did not feature in a single game as a result.
The Tamil Nadu players who had a camp in Tirupur to prepare for the tournament, will be leaving for Jaipur on Saturday. With as many as nine matches in the group stage, TN assistant coach R Prasanna informed that they are not willing to take a risk with Shankar.
"He is mostly unavailable for the first match against Rajasthan. We will take a call after the first game. He wasn't part of the TN camp because of his India A commitments and subsequent injury," Prasanna said on Friday.
"He is pushing hard to be fit for the second game. But we are playing Services on the very next day. So we will have to wait and watch. There is no point pushing it in a long tournament," the former TN left-hander added.
Opener Vijay set to be back for Bengal clash: Meanwhile, M Vijay will miss TN's first three matches and is likely to return for the game against Bengal on October 1. The veteran opener is currently playing county cricket in England for Somerset and is expected to return on September 29 or 30. Till the time Vijay returns, M Shahrukh Khan will fill in for the former.
