India skipper Virat Kohli’s masterclass was on display in Mohali as he guided his side to a seven wicket-win over South Africa on September 18. As a result, the Men in Blues took a 1-0 lead in the series with only one match to go.

Batting first, South Africa scored only 27 runs in the last four overs and 16 off those came in the final over as they managed to post a par score of 149 runs. The innings went into a standstill once Quinton de Kock got out off a brilliant catch from India skipper Virat Kohli.

He and debutant Temba Bavuma had set the platform up with a 50+ stand for the second wicket but the big hits never came in the death overs. The credit goes to the Indian bowlers as well as they found the slower deliveries which held during the second half of the innings.

Chasing 150 runs on a good batting wicket, things looked easy for India. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got off to a flying start adding 30 runs in the first three overs. Andile Phehlukwayo drew the first blood removing Rohit but Dhawan and Virat Kohli looked strong to take the baton on.

They added 61 runs for the second wicket before David Miller’s brilliant catch ended Dhawan’s knock. South Africa looked to sneak in with two wickets in quick succession but Kohli took India home with six balls to spare. Kohli remained unbeaten on 72 runs to return with the man of the match award.

Virat Kohli received his 11th man of the match award to equal former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi in the list of the most man of the match awards in the T20Is. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi leads the chart with 12 awards.

The India skipper will look to keep up his form in the next game as India will look to register a whitewash over South Africa.
