Virat Kohli Nears Top-Ranked Steven Smith’s Ratings In ICC Rankings, R Ashwin Climbs To Seventh Spot
Double-centurion Virat Kohli made big improvement in his ratings and is just one point behind top-ranked Steven Smith in the list of ICC rankings for batsmen. Kohli, who scored 254* in Pune Test, saw his rating go down after the first Test of the series. But with his heroics, he is back in the race for the top spot and another good inning in the series will see him dethrone Smith from the top of the rankings.
Apart from Kohli, India spinner R Ashwin also made significant improvement as he jumped three places to sit at the seventh spot. The 33-year-old old took six wickets in the Pune Test, leading India to a victory.
South Africa pacer Vernon Philander slipped in the rankings and is now placed at the eighth spot. Tom Latham, Dimuth Karunaratne and Ajinkya Rahane were other players who went up in the rankings and are placed at seventh, eighth and ninth spot in the rankings, respectively.
In the list of an all-rounder, Jadeja continues to be on the second spot. The list is topped by Jason Holder with 472 ratings – he leads by 58 ratings by Jadeja. There were no big changes in the ICC rankings apart from Kohli closing in on Smith’s ratings.
India defeated South Africa by an innings and 147 runs in the second Test of the series in Pune. Batting first, the home team piled up 601/5 on the board. Apart from Kohli, Mayank Agarwal (108), Ravindra Jadeja (91) and Ajinkya Rahane (59) made handy contributions to steer the score beyond 600.
