Who is best batsman in the world at present times? This is big question at present time but not an unanswerable question. This question started to rise as Steven Smith played outstanding game in Ashes series and left Virat Kohli, who was reigning at apex in the Test Cricket and other formats, by a big margin.
At present time Steve Smith sported at top position in Test batsman ICC Ranking with 937 point while as Virat Kohli slid down at second position with waned point 899 from 909, in few months.
Steve Smith had not done much after came back from one year suspension due to indulgence in ball tempering scandal on South Africa tour in 2018 during either IPL or World Cup. But he came back strongly in latest edition of Ashes series against England and amassed multiple centuries.
He left Virat Kohli behind by big margin; on the other side, Virat Kohli could not able to make a single century in ICC World Cup or bilateral series (Test). He did not make a century in last 10 Test matches. This is why; Smith surpassed him in Test ranking.
Now, Virat Kohli has gained rhythm and smashed emphatic double century (254* runs) in first inning of second Test against South Africa, therefore his ranking will certainly improve after 2nd Test match and the difference will be reduced.
