imgWhen the South African women’s team took on the Board President’s XI in two warm-up matches in Surat recently, Team Baroda’s hard-hitting all-rounder Tarannum Pathan was a key member of the Board President’s XI. Tarannum shares, “If I manage to impress the selectors in matches like these, it might open up exciting new opportunities for me. I have always dreamt of playing for India, and I hope that I can be in good form whenever the women’s IPL starts in India. For these dreams to come true, I have to keep playing well consistently. No matter which team I play for, my aim has always been to contribute to the team’s success.” She adds, “Today, the competition for a spot in the Indian team is very tough. Now on, in every tournament, I will try to be either highest run-getter or highest wicket-taker. After all, second aane wale ko log jaldi bhool jaate hai! There’s no substitute for hard work and I will keep working harder at every practice session. Now, I am more serious than ever before about my cricket, and I hope that the results will show soon.”

The talented cricketer, who hails from a modest financial background, says that she considers Irfan Pathan to be her mentor and often turns to him for advice. Tarannum shares, “Irfan bhai is like my elder brother and he has taught me to never stop believing in my abilities. I am grateful to him and Yusuf (Pathan) bhai for their continuous support. Last month, when there were flash floods in Vadodara, my cricket kitbag was at the ground and everything inside the kitbag got wet due to the water-logging. When I told Irfan bhai about it, he made alternative arrangements in less than a week. He is like family to me.”
