Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh has finally opened up on his retirement for the first time since quitting the game in June this year. The southpaw brought down curtains on his illustrious career all of a sudden after not being able to make it to the World Cup squad. The World Cup-winning batsman has now hinted that the team-management was responsible to some extent for his premature and sudden retirement.

According to the southpaw, he was asked to prepare for the Sri Lanka series following the 2017 Champions Trophy and then to clear the yo-yo test to be eligible for selection before being completely shunned out of the setup. Yuvraj Singh also said that he did not expect to be dropped after making a good comeback.

Yuvraj Singh went on to reveal that he was dealt another setback after he cleared the yo-yo test. Instead, the selectors asked him to play domestic cricket.

“Never thought that I would be dropped after being the man of the match in 2 games out of the 8-9 I played after the Champions Trophy 2017. I got injured and I was told to prepare for the SL series. then suddenly, the yo-yo test came into the picture. It was a u-turn in my selection,” Yuvraj Singh told Aaj Tak.

“Suddenly I had to go back and prepare for the yo-yo test at the age of 36. Even after I cleared the yo-yo test, I was told to play domestic cricket. They actually thought that I wouldn’t be able to clear the test due to my age. And that it would be easy to decline me afterwards…yeah you can say it was an exercise in making excuses,” he added.

Yuvraj Singh retired as one of the biggest match-winners to have played for India. He was instrumental in India’s historic triumphs at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 50-over World Cup. The southpaw had also helped the Men in Blue make it to the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
